I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6 (NKJV)

There’s a saying that goes, “Your job is to plant the seed, not change their heart. Don’t get your role and God’s role mixed up.” That’s plain truth that’ll straighten out a whole lot of worry if we let it sink in.
If you’ve ever shared your faith with somebody, you know the ache. You pray, you talk, you love on them, and then… nothing. Or so it seems. You start wondering if you said it wrong, if you just weren’t enough. And before long, you’re carrying a burden the Lord never asked you to carry.
Paul understood this perfectly. He told the Corinthians that he planted the seed and Apollos watered it, but it was God — and God alone — who made it grow (1 Corinthians 3:6). He didn’t say, “Between the two of us, we managed to twist a few arms.” The real heart-changing, soul-saving work is God’s business from start to finish.
Jesus said something similar in Mark 4:26-29. He described a man who scatters seed, then goes to bed and gets up day after day, and the seed sprouts and grows — “though he does not know how” (Mark 4:27, NIV). The farmer doesn’t sit out there at midnight talking the seed into growing. He plants, he tends, and he trusts the mystery of growth to the One who wrote the seasons. The harvest comes, but not because the farmer willed it. It comes because God’s been at work underneath the soil the whole time.
And here’s the best part. Way back in Ezekiel, God promised: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh”. Did you catch who’s doing the heart work? “I will give you a new heart.” Not “if you argue well enough, their heart will soften.” God said, “I will.” That’s a promise straight from the Almighty, and He doesn’t go back on His word.
So here’s the freedom: your job is to plant the seed. Maybe you plant it with a kind word to a grouchy neighbor. Maybe you plant it by telling somebody what Jesus has done for you — no fancy sermon, just your story. Then you water it with prayer. But you stop trying to play God. The harvest was never your field to begin with.
That coworker you’ve been praying for? That prodigal child? That friend who rolled their eyes last time you mentioned church? The seed’s in the ground. And the God who promised new hearts is still in the heart-changing business today.
So plant boldly, friend. Plant with joy. And then rest. The harvest belongs to the Lord of the harvest, and He has never lost a crop yet.
Prayer for today
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of planting seeds of Your truth wherever You send me. Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to do Your job — changing hearts that only You can transform. Help me to plant faithfully, to water with prayer and kindness, and to trust You completely with the growth. Give me patience to wait on Your timing and faith to believe the seed is working even when I can’t see it. May I never confuse my role with Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.
