“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”
—1 John 4:1 (KJV)

Some of us were raised to be sweet. Don’t make a fuss. Give folks the benefit of the doubt. Keep smiling, even when something doesn’t feel right.
There’s nothing wrong with being kind. But the Lord never asked us to leave our good sense at the door.
We can love people without believing every word they say. We can forgive somebody and still remember what their choices have shown us. And we can wish them well without inviting them back into places where they have already caused harm.
That isn’t being coldhearted. Sometimes it’s simply wisdom.
Discernment usually isn’t loud. It may be nothing more than a quiet tug that tells us to slow down, pray, and pay attention. Instead of rushing to judge—or talking ourselves out of what we see—we can take it to the Lord and let Him sort through it with us.
Jesus had a tender heart, but nobody pulled the wool over His eyes. He loved people fully while leaning on His Father for wisdom.
We can stand in that same strength.
We don’t have to harden our hearts to protect them. We just need to stay close to the One who sees farther down the road than we ever could.
Prayer for today:
Father, keep my heart tender and my eyes open. Help me love people well without ignoring the truth. When something doesn’t seem right, teach me to slow down and listen for Your voice. Give me wisdom without bitterness and courage without harshness. Help me stand quietly and confidently in Your strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.
