Jesus Moved Into the Neighborhood

John 1:14 (ESV) — “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Take a second and actually sit with what this verse is saying. The eternal Word — the one who was there at creation, holding everything together — became flesh. Skin. Bones. A newborn who needed to be fed and burped like every other baby in history.

That’s not a metaphor. John isn’t being poetic for effect. He’s telling you that God didn’t just send a message from a safe distance. He showed up. He moved into the neighborhood, dealt with hunger and tiredness and grief, and let people bump into him at the market.

Think about how wild that actually is. If you were God, would you do it that way? You could send instructions. You could speak from a mountain and keep some distance. Instead, God chose diapers and splinters and dusty roads. He chose to be close enough to touch.

And here’s the part that gets me every time: he didn’t come close so he could stand over us and judge from arm’s length. John says he came “full of grace and truth.” Not grace instead of truth, and not truth instead of grace — both, all the way, at the same time. That’s a hard combo for humans to pull off. We tend to pick one. Jesus never did.

So if you’ve ever felt like God is distant — like he’s watching from way up there while you deal with real life down here — John 1:14 pushes back on that. He didn’t stay distant. He walked in dust. He got tired. He cried at a funeral. He knows what it’s like to be you, because for a while, he was.

You’re not talking to someone who doesn’t get it. You’re talking to someone who moved in.

Prayer for today:

God, thank you for not staying far away. Thank you for coming close enough to know what this life actually feels like. Help me remember that you’re not distant or disinterested — you’re near, full of grace and full of truth. Meet me right where I am today. Amen.
